xMask

Superficial (SXT) and Orthovoltage (DXT) radiotherapy utilise low energy ionizing radiation to treat cancer and other conditions that occur either on or close to the skin surface¹. Unfortunately, traditional methods for creating SXT and DXT facial shields have many drawbacks. Typically patient contours are acquired with a computed tomography (CT) scan or medium such as plaster of Paris, both of which are resource intensive². CT scans can be time consuming and claustrophobic for some patients while plaster of Paris setups are uncomfortable, diminish the patient experience, and are again time consuming. Furthermore Radiation Therapists and patients are at risk of the health problems associated with exposure to the lead used to fashion facial shields. Thankfully, 3D One has built upon developments in material science and digital manufacturing to provide an accurate, nontoxic, non-invasive and cost-saving replacement for lead facial shielding.

The solution

As Radiation Therapy product specialists, xMask is 3D One’s solution for non-toxic, lead equivalent and patient specific facial shielding. The xMask is used to protect vulnerable organs at risk when treating patients with facial skin cancer through superficial or orthovoltage radiation therapy.

Utilising low-cost handheld optical scanning, 3D computer aided design (CAD) and additive manufacturing techniques, 3D One produces highly accurate facial shields delivered safely and quickly, ready for clinical use.

The xMask uses 3D One’s proprietary lead-equivalent Attenuflex shielding material in conjunction with 3D printed tooling and innovative manufacturing techniques to rapidly create a 3D contoured mask to your clinical specifications.
